Business Innovation

Jan 25, 2024

I heard Marie Yovanovich speak last night. She is the former Ambassador to Ukraine. She gave some background on Ukraine that I have never heard before, specifically about the economy and businesses there. We all know the war shots shown on the news and have heard about the budget fights in Congress. But there is so much more.

There has been an initiative to transform government. This is something that has been underway since the current President took office. Corruption was rampant and this was an obvious target. However, what evolved was innovations in business. For instance, there is an app to do all the registrations that used to be done by handing in paper forms, paying people off at every step, then moving onto the next station to bribe someone else. Not anymore. Transparency rules. This app makes the process visible and trackable, taking the intermittent personal contact (i.e. opportunity for bribe) out of the equation. Just the tip of the iceberg.

Innovation in business has been driven because of the war, requiring public private partnerships to increase their defense industry and capabilities and expand the tech sector. Ukraine is now the top tech innovator in Europe. The economy is growing. Who knew?!

So as I listened in amazement, I thought about the hardships and uncertainty going on. What strength it takes to be creative and invest in your dream when your village may be bombed that night or someone you love is on the war front. This illustrates that where there is passion and self belief, there is success. Necessity is fueling some of these innovations, but the changing world around them is driving many others. Opportunity presented itself and some took initiative.

Here in the United States, most of us can sleep safely at night without fear of invasion or death. Imagine if as entrepreneurs we had the courage to step out and innovate! How would that affect your life? The life of your family? Community? Country? There is always a reason not to take a chance, but every once in a while, there is a reason to take a chance too. Stay strong. Look around. Dream big!
