How Will You Be Remembered?

How Will You Be Remembered?

Nov 02, 2023

It is All Saints Day, All Souls Day, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) - - days of celebrating those who have died. We celebrate those before us, remembering them as they affected each of us individually.

We do this almost daily without realizing it as deaths of celebrities and renowned people are announced, tributes paid, and memories shared. Unfortunately, we do this for mass shootings each day too. Death is a major part of our lives.

It got me to thinking about how I will be remembered. A while ago, I created an exercise "Headline: I AM". Here is the link to the Resources page of the Pivot TBC website https://pivottbc.com/page-6 . The point of the exercise is to look at the milestones you want to create in your life and what will be most important over the years. It breaks it down from today through ten years out, then the final 'headline'. It is for goal setting and course correction for those who do not have a path. But the gist of it is that you look at your life and truly think about what it is that you want to be remembered for.

Matthew Perry, the actor, did this. As part of the social media posts circulated after his unexpected death this past weekend was a letter he wrote asking to be remembered as a kind person who helped others. It was beautiful. He knew that the easy way was to think of him as an actor, but his work with addiction was most important to him.

When you cut to the chase and decide what is important to you, it clarifies your path and your purpose. Your actions can then be aligned with your desired outcome, so you are headed in the sought after direction. It makes life easier.

If you don't have a clear path, then this will help you develop the starting stages. You don't need to know everything. It will evolve and change over time. But if you sit with this exercise, truly think about what is important to you, you can then set your path and take the steps necessary to get it.

I will be remembered by my family and friends. Favorably or not is not up to me. I am living my life with joy and doing my best to be kind and hope that I impact those around me for the better. We are all works in progress, so I have a few years left to work on this....
